Heavy Truck

Heavy Truck Information

A heavy truck is any motor vehicle with a net vehicle weight of more than 5,000 lbs. The registration is based on the gross vehicle weight (GVW). Heavy trucks are designed/used for the carriage of goods (pick-up truck) or equipped with a connective device for drawing a trailer (truck tractor/semi). This includes any motor vehicle that has had modifications such as a cabinet box, a platform, a rack, or other equipment added for the purpose of carrying goods (except for the personal effects of the passengers or an attached trailer).

A truck tractor is a motor vehicle which has four or more wheels and equipped with a fifth wheel for the primary purpose of drawing a semi-trailer that is attached by means of a fifth wheel. The tractor has no provision for carrying loads independently.

Heavy Truck Weight

You’ll need to know your truck’s gross vehicle weight to register a heavy truck.

How do I know my truck’s weight for registration?

  • Check your vehicle’s door jamb sticker – it shows the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which is what you’ll use for registration.

If the sticker is missing or unreadable, you can:

  • Review previous registration documents if you’re renewing.
  • Check your vehicle title or manufacturer specifications for the GVWR.
