State-mandated policy change: Effective February 6, 2026, all driver license knowledge and driving exams administered in the State of Florida will be offered in English only. Language translation devices and services for both written and road tests will no longer be permitted. Learn more about this state-mandated policy change.


Taking Your Road Test

Before scheduling an appointment, please read the Road Test Details and Preparation Guides section to ensure you are fully prepared and that your visit goes as smoothly as possible.

Special Circumstances: If you need to take a driving test due to a medical condition or 3 crashes in 3 years, please call our office to schedule an appointment.

Ready to take your road test? Road tests are available by appointment only and are open to Hillsborough County residents only. Only one attempt is permitted per day.

What are the road test requirements?

  1. Bring your required documentation. Learn more about document requirements.
    • If you are a permit holder, bring your permit with you.
  2. You need to bring your own vehicle and it must meet the following criteria:
    • Valid license plate
    • Current vehicle registration
    • Proof of valid Personal Injury Protection and Property Damage Liability Insurance
    • Operable seatbelts (exceptions: cars made before 1968, trucks made before 1972)
    • Pass a vehicle safety inspection.

The items listed below are not inclusive; please refer to the official Florida Drivers Handbook for additional information.

  • Horn must be heard from 200 ft
  • Must have rearview mirror (inside or outside)
  • Directional signals or knowledge of hand signals (if directional signals are not working)
  • Two (2) Brake lights must work
  • Headlights
  • Doors must open from inside & outside
  • Driver & passenger windows must work
  • Car must be clean (We reserve the right not to administer a driving test)
  • Emergency brake must work
  • Tires must be in good condition (Cannot be worn)
  • Windshield wipers must work. If raining some vehicles do not meet the requirements (Refer to Florida Drivers Handbook)
  • Glass must have clear view to front, sides and rear

Important notes:

  • If your vehicle doesn’t pass the safety inspection, your test will be rescheduled.
  • Only the driver and the examiner are allowed to be in the vehicle during the road test.

Do drivers under 18 years of age need additional requirements?

A parent, guardian, or responsible adult (21 years or older) must be present with identification to certify you’ve completed 50 hours of driving experience (including 10 hours of nighttime driving). If they cannot attend, they must complete the Certification of Driving Experience of a Minor, Form HSMV 71143 (PDF).
