Important Information About Florida ID Cards

Age Requirements:
- Must be at least 5 years old.
- Exception: Customers eligible for a Disabled Parking Permit may get an identification card regardless of their age.
ID Card Duration:
- Children ages 5-14 receive a 4-year ID card.
- Adults and teens 15 and older receive an 8-year ID card.
Legal Requirement:
Florida law prohibits holding both a driver license and ID card. You must surrender any existing driver license or ID card from Florida or any other state before receiving a Florida ID card (unless it was lost or stolen).
Get a Florida Identification Card
Step 1 – Prepare your documents
Gather documents that verify your identity, Social Security Number, U.S. citizenship or lawful presence status, and proof of Florida residency. Visit our document requirements page to know what to bring.

Homeless individuals are eligible to receive an original, replacement or renewal identification card at no charge. Customers must present all required original documents proving legal name, lawful presence and social security number. In addition, proof of residency in the form of a homeless certification letter, issued by a homeless shelter or halfway house is required. Letters dated more than 90 days old cannot be accepted.
Step 2 – Visit one of our offices and pay applicable fees
Once you have gathered all your documents, visit one of our offices to apply for an identification card.

Plan ahead! No appointment necessary for this service, but scheduling ahead can save you time. Appointments are for Hillsborough County residents only and require a driver license or alien number to schedule.
