Boat Registration Requirements & Discounts
Which boats need to be registered?
All motorized boats operating on Florida’s public waterways must be titled and registered. Non-motorized boats 16 feet or longer also require registration.
You must register your boat within 30 days of purchase.
What do I need to know about boat registration?
- You’ll receive a decal showing your registration year. Place the decal on the left (port) side of your boat and position it immediately before or after your registration number.
- For federally documented boats: affix to a window or windshield on the port side.
- Remove any previous year’s decals.
- Keep your registration certificate on board while operating your boat. Operating an unregistered boat is a second-degree misdemeanor.
- If you’re a non-resident with valid out-of-state registration, you may use your boat in Florida for up to 90 days. Boats used longer than 90 days must be registered with our office.
What are the registration fees and expiration dates?
Registration fees are based on the boat’s length. View boat registration fees.
Expiration dates:
- Individual owners: Registration expires during your birth month each year.
- Company-owned boats: Registration expires June 30 of the following year.
Am I eligible for any registration discounts?
First-time registration discount: If you’re registering your boat for the first time partway through the year, you’ll only pay for the remaining months until your registration expires. This discount does not apply to yearly renewals.
Emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) reduced renewal fee: Is your boat equipped with an EPIRB or personal locator beacon? If so, you could be eligible for a reduced renewal fee. Before you renew, visit NOAA’s website for a beacon registration or contact the Beacon Registration Team.
